The Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama Collection
“Blending the creativity of Yayoi Kusama and the savoir-faire of Louis Vuitton, the new collection reinterprets the Maison’s iconic pieces, infused with the artist’s signature motifs. Celebrating art, audacity and craftsmanship, Kusama’s painted dots, metal dots, infinity dots and psychedelic flower enliven the universe of Louis Vuitton.“– Louis Vuitton
For the highly anticipated collection, staple Louis Vuitton pieces are re-envisioned through a Yayoi Kusama lens. As expected from their promotions of the announced collaboration on billboards in Tokyo, the collection features various designs signature to Kusama’s artistic vision embellished onto an array of clothes, shoes, and accessories. One of the designs featured in this collection is the colourfully painted dots, curated to resemble hand-painted dots. Knit tops and denim skirts are embellished with painted dots, as are accessories like the limited edition silk BB bandeau with the LV monogram on one side and the signature Yayoi Kusama painted dots on the other.
Bags like the classic Capucines MM bag have become refined through the collaboration with colourfully painted dots embellished on black leather. Along with painted dots and polka dots, the design theme of metal dots and psychedelic flowers (inspired by Kusama’s previous work) adorned the accessories and attire of the French fashion house Louis Vuitton. The LV Capucines BB bag, in particular, is envisioned in silver leather with 3D metal dots hand-adorned onto the bag.
Yayoi Kusama: The Kusama World
The renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is well-known for her unique and signature art style, which includes her infamous polka dot designs. Some of her most notable pieces of work include the Narcissus Garden, displayed at the Venice Biennale in 1966. The display featured approximately 1,500 reflective metallic balls that acted as inspiration for the Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collaboration.
“I am determined to create a Kusama world, which no one has ever done and trodden into”– Yayoi Kusama
